Novice events for weightlifting in the ACT...
Weightlifting ACT seeks to provide as many opportunities as possible for individuals to participate in the sport of weightlifting within the Canberra region.
Most of our events throughout the year are Australian Weightlifting Federation (AWF) sanctioned events which means that the International Weightlifting Federation’s (IWF)
associated with the sport of weightlifting must apply to enable individuals who are competing to have their results validly recorded and entered for qualification purposes. This includes among other things, that competitions have certified technical officials and that competitors adhere to a number of requirements such as wearing a one-piece suit with elbows visible, have weight belts that are the correct size, must be subject to strict anti-doping requirements and testing and a number of other things.
However, we also try to provide opportunities for those individuals who just want to participate in weightlifting for fun or for other reasons and as such, we aim to have to least 1-2 competitions per year that will be open to ‘novice’ lifters and where the same strict requirements to participate or compete will not apply to those lifters. In 2018, we expect the following events will be open to novice competitors:
24 March 2018, and
22 September 2018.
Keep up date with our announcements on Facebook and Instagram.
Anyone who wishes to compete in any WACT event including novice events (as an athlete, coach or technical official) must be registered with WACT and the AWF for insurance purposes. To enter a novice event you need to complete the ‘Novice Lifter Form’ which WACT then uses to register you for insurance purposes (form available under
This will make you a ‘Novice Member’ which enables you to attend and compete in any novice competitions that WACT offers throughout the year, however it does not entitle you to any other benefits of membership (unless you choose to upgrade your novice membership and become a full senior or junior member, which after experiencing how much fun weightlifting competitions are we hope you will consider!!).
Novice lifters will be provided with a full demonstration of the lifts and format of a competition and we will have qualified coaches there on the day to assist you if you have any questions or would like someone to help coach you on the day (this is all included in your entry fee).
Other details about entry conditions including entry fees for novice competitors will be advised at least 2 weeks before a competition on our website and through social media.
